The Needle Felting Tool You Never Knew You Needed
The humble wooden BBQ skewer is a versatile tool that provides a stable foundation for shaping mushrooms, offering control over their structure while ensuring a firm finish with fewer needle marks. Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have some experience, the BBQ skewer will help you streamline your felting process and make it easier to achieve professional-looking results. With the right techniques and materials, you’ll be able to craft your own collection of delightful needle-felted mushrooms in no time.
I’ll share my three favorite techniques, all of which rely on this little-known tool. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate needle-felter, these ideas will elevate your mushrooms to the next level.
1. Entire Mushroom Made as One Piece
This method involves shaping the entire mushroom, including the cap and stalk, around a BBQ skewer using Jacob wool top. You then cover the mushroom cap with a carded wool layer. The benefit of making the mushroom in one piece is that it becomes much easier to maintain its shape without needing to attach separate parts later. This technique also ensures better structural stability and minimizes visible marks from the felting needle. Finally, a reverse felting needle was used to draw the white wool to the top adding a lovely subtle effect.
2. Stalk Only Made on BBQ Skewer with a Cap Shaped Using a Cookie Cutter
In this technique, the stalk is also formed around a BBQ skewer. The cap, however, is made using a cookie cutter as a rough guide, providing the flexibility to shape it to your preference. This cap can be embellished with silk throwsters’ waste around the stalk, and a needle felted ‘skirt’ adding a unique touch. The use of a cookie cutter simplifies the creation of the cap while allowing room for customization.
3. Stalk Only on BBQ Skewer with a Cap Made from a Felt Ball
The stalk is formed around the BBQ skewer for this method. If you want to you can start by layering a dark wool layer under the final wool layer. This can then be pulled through using a reverse needle. Using this technique adds an interesting contrast and texture to the stalk, and the mushroom cap is simply made from a felt ball that has been cut in half. This shortcut can save you roughly an hour of felting if you’re aiming for a perfect finish, especially helpful if you’re making a lot of mushrooms for gifts or fairs.
Yarn embellishments can be added for roots and the top color is created using a cookie cutter as a guide. Photographs for this method demonstrate how to easily shape the cap and stalk and add root details.
Take Your Marvelous Mushrooms to the Next Level
In each of these methods, the BBQ skewer provides a reliable foundation to shape your felted mushrooms. The final layer of carded wool gives them a polished finish. Try experimenting with these techniques to find your preferred method and let your creativity run wild.
